The main disadvantage of a guardianship is that it is a court preceding. Due process is required, time and expense are involved. Court hearings happen, the court does not always rule the way you would like the court to rule. The advantage of not using a guardianship, perhaps relying on a durable power of attorney or maybe even a revocable living trust as to property would be that you are outside of the court system and your agent or your trustee is acting on your behalf, consistent with your written directions.
