Do I have to wait 5 years after giving anything away to get Medicaid?

Generally there is a 5 year look back period from the time that you make your Medicaid application, to see if you’ve given anything away. If you have given anything away within the previous 5 years, you will be penalized from the date of your application for the amount that you’ve given away within the previous 5 years.

The Department of Children and Families takes the amount that you’ve given away the previous 5 years, and divides it by the divisor, to find out how many months you’ll be penalized. The current divisor amount is $7,995 per month.
