If I gave things away, do I have to wait five years to get Medicaid?

Medicaid will look back for five years from the date of your application to see if you’ve given anything away. If you have, then they will penalize you for the amount of time that that amount of money would’ve paid for you to stay in a nursing facility. However, you do not have to wait five years before you make an application. You can make an application and then wait out the penalty period or you can have the people you gave the assets to give the assets back to you. That’s called a cure, and that will take care of the penalty.
